People Unhoused with Pets

What is PUP Service Project?

People Unhoused with Pets is a street outreach program providing direct support by delivering food and basic necessities to the homeless population.  We also provide pet food and supplies, as well as basic veterinary care, to pets owned by at-risk families and individuals experiencing homelessness.

The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the existing housing crisis.  Because of record high unemployment, people who've never experienced food and housing insecurity are finding themselves unhoused or seriously at-risk.

We leverage the human-animal bond to engage and assist people. There is a growing awareness that pets play a positive role in the lives of individuals and families, however most homeless shelters do not accommodate animals.  Often, keeping a pet healthy and safe provides an uprooted person a sense of normalcy, purpose, and accountability.  Providing for a pet's basic needs is often empowering in an otherwise disempowering circumstance.  We recognize that a loving pet can be family and a lifeline when living without permanent housing and social support systems.

By delivering food and basic necessities we aim to free up family resources for housing needs.
